Buckminster College is developing a groundbreaking approach to education in the middle and high school years (ages 10-18). The comprehensive Buckminster curriculum is academically ambitious, highly interdisciplinary, psychologically insightful, and tailor-designed for students hungry of big-picture perspectives and deep-dive understandings. The general idea is that cognitive development in adolescence must be supported (and indeed boldly inspired!) along accelerating, asynchronous, and divergent learning trajectories. The aim is good attunement to complexity: the complexity of the world — and the complexity of the mind. The underlying theoretical and philosophical approaches are sourced from the Buckminster’s team research in the domain of pedagogy of individuation and thriving in the complex, uncertain, open-ended universe. Behind the project is a group of instructors and alumni of the Postgraduate School of Thinking VUB and the ‘Pearl Divers’ research group of the Center Leo Apostel (CLEA) at the Free University in Brussels (VUB)..

Education is a resource-intensive, intelligence-intensive, and heart-intensive undertaking, even when done according to the traditional formulas and knowledge cultures and sustained by public funding. Initial phases of novel concepts, aiming to reinvent these formulas and radically expand the horizons, are even more so! Buckminster College is eagerly seeking funding for development and every donation, however small, is sincerely appreciated!
